Malaysia Tour Types
Pick the format that fits you

Start with the trip you want

You don’t need to learn the jargon to plan a good holiday.

You just need to know who you’ll travel with, how much of your day is planned, and what the price includes. Start with whichever question is on your mind.

The people and the pace

Your own group, or a few new faces?

Think about an ordinary day on holiday. Would you rather follow a ready-made plan, or have more say over where you stop and how long you stay?

Open trip

Join a group

You book a place on a trip that other people can join too. The dates and route are usually set, so you can turn up without planning each day yourself.

A good starting point if you’re travelling solo or as a couple and enjoy meeting people.

Ask before booking: Is the departure confirmed, and will I share a room or pay a single supplement?

Private tour

Just your people

The tour is for you and the people you’re travelling with. You agree the itinerary in advance, with more room to plan around your interests and pace.

Travelling with children or parents who prefer fewer stops? This is a useful option to discuss.

Ask before booking: Is a guide included, and which parts of the itinerary can we change?

Seat in coach (SIC)

Share the ride

You share transport with other guests for a transfer or sightseeing tour. There may be several hotel pickups, and you’ll need to follow the operator’s timetable.

Worth considering when you’re happy with fixed timings and don’t need a vehicle to yourselves.

Ask before booking: Does pickup cover my hotel, and how long should I allow for the journey?

These terms can overlap. An open trip might use SIC transport. A private holiday might still include a shared airport transfer. Check each part of the itinerary.

What’s actually booked

Already have flights? Prefer to leave some days open?

Ground package

This covers arrangements at your destination, without flights. Hotels, transfers, tours and meals depend on the package.

Already booked your tickets? Share your arrival and departure times so the ground arrangements fit.

Free and easy

Some essentials are arranged, often a hotel and transfers, with time left for you to explore. Flights and day tours may be optional.

You may also see “FIT” used for independent travel. The label alone doesn’t tell you what’s included.

Series departure

A tour offered on a series of published dates. You choose a departure and follow its planned itinerary.

Before arranging your leave or flights, check whether your chosen departure is confirmed or still needs more bookings.

Let’s read one together

What does that package description mean?

Here’s a made-up example. It shows why a few words in a quote are worth a second look.

Example only, not a package offer

4D3N Kuala Lumpur · Ground package · Private city tour · SIC transfers · BB

Four days, three nights
Arrival and departure days count. You may not have four full days of sightseeing.
Flights are separate
“Ground package” means you’ll need to arrange flights separately.
Private sightseeing, shared transfers
Your city tour is just for your group. The transfers marked SIC are shared with other guests.
Breakfast is included
BB means bed and breakfast. Keep a budget for lunch, dinner and anything else not listed.

Still to check: hotel name, room type, entrance tickets, pickup times and any extra charges.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

How much room do you want to leave for eating out?

If trying local food is part of your holiday, you may want a few meals free. If you’d rather have meals arranged, look at half board or full board.

Meal plan abbreviations and what they usually include
Meal planUsually includes
Room only (RO)Room, with no meals
Bed and breakfast (BB)Room and breakfast
Half board (HB)Breakfast and one main meal, usually dinner
Full board (FB)Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Full board doesn’t automatically mean all-inclusive. Check drinks, meal venues, dietary requests and which meals are provided on arrival and departure days.

Before you say yes

Comparing two quotes? Ask the same questions.

A lower total can mean a different room, shared transport or fewer meals. Get these details in writing so you know what you’re comparing.

  1. Which hotel and room type?

Check the room setup, location and whether the named hotel is confirmed.

  2. What will we share?

Ask about airport transfers and day tours separately.

  3. What will we pay for there?

Look for meals, tickets, local taxes, tipping and optional activities.

  4. What if our plans change?

Read the payment, cancellation and date-change terms before paying a deposit.

Planning something a little more specific?

The occasion matters too. Start here for trips with a particular purpose.
