Discovering Malaysia’s Eco-Tourism Potential: A Special Trip with Tourism Malaysia
After joining an insightful Agro-Tourism tour earlier this year, ZFB Travel was once again invited by Tourism Malaysia. This time to take part in a dedicated industry workshop focused on eco-tourism. Held in Kuala Terengganu, this 4-day trip brought together selected travel agencies to explore one of Malaysia’s most promising travel segments: eco-tourism.
More than just another site visit, this was an opportunity to learn, network, and immerse ourselves in real-world examples of nature-based travel, all in preparation for the upcoming Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
29 July – 1 August 2025 @ Kuala Terengganu
Day 1: Welcome to Kuala Terengganu
Our journey began with an arrival in Kuala Terengganu on the afternoon of 29 July 2025. After checking in at the hotel, we gathered for a casual dinner, a great opportunity to meet fellow participants and get excited for what’s ahead.
Day 2: Insights, Sharing & Strategy
The second day kicked off with a keynote speech by a senior representative from Tourism Malaysia’s Package Development Division. This was followed by presentations on Malaysia’s current eco-tourism offerings and adventure-based travel products.
Representatives from Terengganu, Pahang, and Kelantan shared inspiring stories and case studies on their state’s unique natural assets and local tourism initiatives.
In the afternoon, the group participated in open discussions to brainstorm new eco-tour packages, community engagement ideas, and the role of travel agencies in promoting sustainable tourism. The day ended with a networking dinner filled with positive energy and shared vision.
Day 3: Nature, Heritage & Local Culture
Our favourite part of the trip is the field experience!
We started the day with a visit to the Setiu Wetland School, where we learned about conservation efforts and took part in nature-based activities in this lush mangrove ecosystem. It's a destination with great potential for educational and eco-conscious tours.
Next, we visited the Terrapuri Heritage Village. It's a living museum of traditional Malay architecture and heritage conservation. Later in the evening, we explored the iconic Pasar Payang, a bustling local market known for crafts, textiles, and authentic Terengganu flavours.
At 10:30PM, we were treated to something truly special! A rare behind-the-scenes experience at the Kuala Terengganu Drawbridge, one of the city's modern landmarks. With special arrangement by the Terengganu Tourism representative, the bridge was temporarily closed and lifted just for our group. Watching the massive structure rise against the night sky was nothing short of breathtaking. A perfect fusion of engineering, design, and hospitality in Kuala Terengganu.
It was a beautiful end to a day that celebrated both nature and innovation.
Day 4: The Program Ends, But the Vision Begins
On our final morning, we checked out and returned home filled with new ideas and inspiration. More importantly, we left with a renewed commitment to develop tour products that honour Malaysia’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
This workshop was an eye-opener, not just about what eco-tourism is, but what it can be for Malaysia. At ZFB Travel, we’re excited to start designing nature-friendly, community-led tour packages that align with the values of responsible travel.
